One of the Global leaders in International Telecommunications called
in The PowerWorks project team when they were considering housing their major fibre-optic node for Western Europe.
Planning to install their critical services within one of Europe's leading Co-location sites, the brief was to
ensure 'Level 3' availability of Power Systems. |
 |
|
The site already housed parallel Generators and a 1.2MW Rotary UPS.
The PowerWorks Technical team considered dual power paths without single point failure and were able to recommend the
use of a dedicated 80kVA UPS to provide a second secure power supply to the load, and using twin static switch load transfer
modules to provide UPS backed 'A' and 'B' supplies to dual fed racks within their secure enclosure.

The PowerWorks team were contracted not only to supply the necessary equipment,
consisting of 80kVA PW-3 UPS, 100A PW-LTM static switch, Twin distribution panels with Power Monitoring and Metering,
but also to fully install the equipment, provide underfloor feeds to each rack cabinet and fully integrate the system
with the Co-location site’s BMS, working on ModBus.

Work required installing new mains feeds from the building's power supply switch
panel to the new UPS location some 70m away - cables were to pass through fire panels and structural walls.

UPS output was to be split into two independent feeds. The UPS installation was completed
with a PW-MBS external maintenance bypass system.

Supplies from the new UPS system were then installed to feed the new PW-LTM Static Switches
on the data centre floor, on the level above. Similarly new supplies from the existing rotary UPS were installed to feed the second LTM.

Outputs from the two PW-LTM Static Switches were fed to new Distribution Panels,
from where power was distributed underfloor as two independent feeds to each rack cabinet.

As with many such projects undertaken by The PowerWorks, time was extremely tight,
and to complicate matters the customer was asking us to work simultaneously in three European locations - Hamburg, Brussels and Paris.
